NC Wise Owl

NCWiseOwl.org is the go-to for all your research needs. It features a number of databases with access to encyclopedia entries, full-text periodical articles, and more. 

Click Middle School and then check out some of my favorite resources, including:

  • Explora - This is my go-to database for everything
  • Britannica School - I wish I would've had access to this regularly updated online encyclopedia
  • Gale, Research in Context - Another database with a wealth of resources
  • Full-text finders - You can find ENTIRE ARTICLES from publications like New York Times, Sports Illustrated, and more:
    • Click Find Publications
    • Choose from one of the options available
  • Points-of-View Reference Center - If you need articles that cover both sides of a controversial issue, this database is for you

Google Arts and Culture

So much to learn. So little time. Google Arts and Culture is one of my favorite Google sites because it curates rich learning experiences in one central hub. You can take virtual trips, learn about famous historical periods, or gain insight into your favorite artist. 

Tips to navigate (just to name a few):

  • Use the hamburger menu in the upper left-hand corner (three lines stacked atop each other) to find different ways to navigate
  • Use Collections to get a comprehensive list of what's available
  • Use Themes to find curated sets of information and experiences related to a particular theme
  • Use Historical Events to immerse yourself in a historical time period

Discovery Ed

A tried and true favorite, Discovery Ed contains videos and articles related to many subject areas, although we mainly use it to bolster science instruction.

Khan Academy

Khan Academy is known for having second-to-none (except maybe our awesome Cyclone teachers) knowledge and resources when it comes to math. But they offer so much more. With school closings, they even offer up daily schedules with links to resources from their site and others, breaks for eating and playing, and blocks of time appropriate to each grade level band.
