Ms. Kara Johnson

Interim Principal, 8th grade

Greetings! My journey in education began in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from North Carolina Central University and starting my career as a 3rd grade teacher within Durham Public Schools. A few years later, I earned a Master's in School Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2019. Currently, I'm embarking on a Doctorate in Educational Leadership at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Prior to joining Smith Middle School, I served as the Assistant Principal at C & L McDougle Middle and as the Testing Coordinator/MTSS Coach at Riverside High School in Durham, NC.

Outside of work, I cherish time with my family: my husband, our 1-year-old son, and our rescue Pitbull. We love traveling, reading together, and cheering on basketball games.

I advocate for a student-centered culture rooted in collaboration and leadership. I'm eager to connect with the staff, students, and families to ensure success for all learners at Smith Middle School.

Looking forward to a fantastic year ahead!

Ms. LaTekka Lewis

Principal Intern, 7th grade

I am excited to serve as the Principal Intern at Smith Middle School this year. My passion for education began at Shaw University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Biology Education.  I continued my educational journey and received a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Capella University. Currently I am pursuing a Master of School Administration (MSA) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

I have taught middle school science and social studies for 23 years, including nine years here at Smith Middle School. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family, reading, and baking amazing treats.

I am deeply committed to student success, instructional excellence, and collaborative leadership.  I look forward to helping our school #Level Up this year!
